A truly enjoyable night of traditional sounds, Ishbel MacAskill’s famous solos have taken her from her home on Isle of Lewis, to every corner of the globe, but has—for the 2nd year running—brought her back to the Wee Toon to share her ‘spine-tingling’ repertoire.

Food stalls, charity stalls and sponge-throwing stalls offer an afternoon of family fun (and hopefully sun!). Local organisations parade in fancy dress for a prize of £100 as ‘Music & Dance Through The Ages’, and no parade would be complete without Gigha’s finest Charlie the Horse!
2.30pm Heritage Centre (£2.50)
FEASGAIR GAIDHLIC
A celebration of Gaelic culture featuring Ishbel MacAskill, Catherine MacNeill, the Kintyre Ladies’ Choir and Mod gold-medallist Norman McKinnon. Also appearing is Donald McKeeve, a member of Kenneth Thompson’s Glasgow Hebridean Choir. Acts include waulking songs, and stories of Gaelic heritage illustrated by song.

FESTIVAL CONCERT

Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham
These two veterans of folk are making a welcome return to the town. Phil has played accordion since the ripe old age of three, and Shetlander Aly began learning fiddle at 11. They met while filming a folk programme for Channel 4 in 1989 and have toured together annually ever since.

Peatbog Faeries
Traditional Celtic folk mixed with reggae and soca beats and bass makes a totally unique sound to get your feet tapping. Bagpipes blended with keyboards and electric guitars puts a new meaning to the phrase ‘opposites attract’! “Sexy is not a word usually associated with Celtic music but this certainly is.” Scotsman

Malinky
Striking duets make a refreshing combination with the bouzouki, guitar, whistle and bodhran, among others, and with influences from Eastern European sounds the Danny Award for best new talent from Celtic Connections (1999) was definitely well deserved.

Four Men & A Dog
This energetic Irish group made their mark with their own (and probably the first in history) Irish rap song! Their distinctive sound of unabashed merriment and jigs can only be described as “traditional music with balls!” It’s worth going along just to see what instrument the dog plays!

Pipework
A relatively new local assemblage consisting of Pipe Majors Iain McKerral and John Brown with local singer/songwriter Dave Bisset.

M.C Arthur Johnstone

7.45pm Royal Hotel (£TBA)
CEILIDH DANCE
Campbeltown’s Fiddle and Accordion Club, guarantee a great night. Plenty of ‘heeeuuuchs’ all round!

SUNDAY 19th

“IT’S A KNOCKOUT” COMPETITION
Hosted by Greenwood, fun and frolics is guaranteed in Campbeltown’s own version of the game show. A prize is up for grabs, and surely it’s worth a custard pie or two!
2.30pm Burnside Square (Free)

LICENSING LAWS

A local bi-law prohibiting the consumption of alcohol outwith a ‘designated area’ came into effect on 1st August 1999. Permission for a ‘designated area’ for the consumption of alcohol has been granted to the Mull of Kintyre Music & Arts Association to include a cordoned off area on Kinloch Green on Saturday & Sunday 12 noon-5pm only and in Burnside Square Car Park on Saturday evening 5pm-8pm only. The consumption of alcohol outwith these areas or allocated times will be deemed an offence. We will be grateful if members of the public observe the new laws in order to create a relaxed, enjoyable weekend for young and old alike and maintain a good image of the town for potential visitors and for future festivals and local events.

Thank you for your support.
