Memorial Service 10th October 2006

It was discovered by members of the original RAF Leuchars Mountain Rescue Team that a Memorial Stone had been erected in 1998 on the Mull of Kintyre to commemorate the victims of the tragic accident on 10th October 1956.

It was decided by the RAF Mountain Rescue Association to approach the colleagues of the crew who were involved in erecting the original Memorial Stone to ascertain whether they were in favour of the RAF Leuchars Mountain Rescue, team who had attended the crash, also expressing their condolences by adding an appropriate plaque to the Memorial Stone. There was general assent for this, and a plaque was designed for the RAF Mountain Rescue Association. The date arranged for fixing the plaque to the Memorial stone was October 10th 2006, this being the 50th Anniversary of the crash.

It had earlier been decided to arrange a special service at Topcliffe church in order to commemorate the 50th anniversary. This was held on Sunday 8th October and was very well attended by relatives, ex-RAF Topcliffe colleagues of the crew as well as 36 Squadron Association members and RAF Mountain Rescue personnel.

Another memorial service was held at St. Blaan's kirk Southend to commemorate the crew of Neptune WX545 on Tuesday 10th October prior to the younger and fitter representatives climbing to the site of the Neptune Memorial stone from Southend Lighthouse car park. A further service was then held at the Memorial stone and wreaths were laid.
